AbstractIn this study, a biodegradable Zn-0.5 wt%Zr alloy was treated by laser surface remelting, and its surface microstructure, microhardness and corrosion resistance were investigated. The results reveal that the Zn22Zr phase in the original Zn-Zr alloy was dissolved and fine dendrites were formed in the remelting zone. The microhardness of the remelting zone increased to about 100 HV0.025 from 40 similar to 50 HV0.025 of the original state. The LSR-treated surface shows much lower corrosion current and more positive corrosion potential than the original alloy, the simulated corrosion rate decreased obviously. (C) 2018 Elsevier B.V.
